Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist, and illustrator, recognized for his contribution to the theory of evolution by natural selection, co-discovering this concept with Charles Darwin. He is also considered the father of biogeography, the discipline that studies the distribution of species on the planet.
